Domaine Prieuré Roch, Nuits-Saint-Georges

Domaine Prieuré Roch, Nuits-Saint-Georges

Domaine Prieuré Roch was founded by Henry-Frédéric Roch, who sadly passed away. He was co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and grandson of Henri Leroy. In 1988 DRC chose to sell some parcels in Vosne-Romanée. Henry-Frédéric Roch chose to purchase these himself and created his own personal domaine, “The Priory Roch”.

A rare fact in Burgundy, the Domain owns three of the most prestigious “Clos Monopoles”. Clos des Corvées (5 ha in Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru), Clos des Varoilles (6 h in Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru) and the rarest of all, Clos Goillotte (0.55 ha in Vosne Romanée) which was a private vineyard of Prince de Conti.

The winemaking philosophy at “DPR” is built upon an organic approach to viticulture. They use old vines exclusively (30-100 years of age) and harvest as late as possible in several tries, to get as much fruit and phenolic ripeness as they can, whilst bringing in healthy grapes. In the cellar, natural vinification is the metier: whole bunch fermentation, punching down by foot, no fining, no filtration and very conservative use of sulphur. The results are wines of extraordinary aromatics and energy, with brilliant acidity and ripe, complex fruits; capable of drinking young but also for long-term cellaring. Stylistically they are totally unique and unsurprisingly given the calibre of their vineyards, of absolutely outstanding quality.

Antonio Quari is the winemaker of Domaine Prieuré Roch. After completing his apprenticeship under the guidance of Henry-Frédéric Roch and Yannick Champ, he is now heading the winemaking department.
