Seeking a fresh agency to complement our established partners in Champagne, we went to see Jean-Marc Sélèque, about whom we had heard very good things. Jean-Marc is a young guy who has been making wine on his own for the last ten years. His domaine is 9ha altogether, created from what he inherited from his father Henri. It was immediately clear to us that Jean-Marc has stunning terroir. He works with no fewer than 45 plots around 7 different villages: Pierry – the heart of the domaine – Moussy, Epernay, Mardeuil, Dizy, Boursault and Vertus; some of his vines are more than 70 years old. Not only is Jean-Marc the committed custodian of beautiful land, he has also carefully cultivated the knowhow to make the most of it. He vinifies the most interesting terroirs separately to create his blanc de blancs, 100% Meunier, 100% Pinot Noir and the 7-plot top cuvée “Partition”. He notes the soil and subsoil of each and every cuvée he creates, using language that makes you realise this is someone who is truly in tune with his environment (his Coteaux Champenois wines, for example, are grown on “loamy and very loving clays”). His attention to detail is no different in the cuverie; he recently built a new winemaking facility and is using a mixture of stainless steel, 450l oak barrels, and a perpetual reserve (a solera) to raise his wines. For the top wines he does a direct pressing in a small manual press. All this means Jean-Marc is creating beautifully pure, exciting champagnes. This is most certainly a domaine to watch and we’re hugely enthusiastic about bringing them to the UK.
