When Richard and Stéphane Martin of Domaine de la Croix Senaillet purchased Domaine du Mont-Epin in 2015, they had a simple goal: to make wines that are fresh and pure at a good price. They have done more than that: they are producing wines that can compete with more illustrious white Burgundies.
Le Domaine du Mont Épin covers beautiful terroirs across two appellations, Viré-Clessé and Mâcon-Péronne. 4 ha is of 45-50 year old vine Viré-Clessé on a gentle slope with an eastern exposition. The single parcel of Mâcon-Péronne forms a clos, situated just at the foot of the chai, with a western orientation planted mid slope. In the protection of the hill, this parcel benefits from a natural barrier against the elements, and therefore matures slowly, giving a wine of gorgeously concentrated fruit, purity and vitality.
Farming is done low intervention and sustainably. The wines are certified chemical-free since vintage 2019. The conversion to these methods started in August 2015 and lasted three years, as required in the UE legislation. For the most part the wines are not raised in oak, only simply fermented and matured on the fine lees, in stainless steel tanks, for 8 months. The Vire-Clesse Breillonde (made from the finest 0.8 hectares of the domaine) is vinified in a combination of 70% stainless steel tanks and 30% 600 litre demi muids, on the fine lees, for 8 months.
