Guy Bouvet, Antoine’s grandfather, launched his small Mareuil-sur-Ay domaine in 1970 and ran it largely by himself, with most of the 5.5 hectares being sold to Bollinger. Guy worked with a few vineyards spread across the villages of Mareuil-sur-Ay, Avenay Val d’Or and Bisseuil. From an early age, Antoine took a keen interest in the family business. He learned from his grandfather the joy of caring for the land and the 60-year-old vineyards, and the precision of cellar work that is so very necessary to make great Champagne. Antoine’s love for his grandfather and all that was imparted to him is depicted in the homage to him on the label of his Champagnes. Antoine attended Viticampus in Avize and started working with his grandfather in 2011; in 2013, at the very tender age of 17, he took over the domaine. 1 hectare is used for his own label whilst the rest is sold to Bollinger. Therefore only a very limited number of bottles are produced, sometimes only 600 bottles per cuvée.
While working with his grandfather in the first couple of years, Antoine began the transition of the estate to natural farming practices; since 2016, all his vineyards have been farmed 100% biodynamic throughout. With a clear-eyed confidence that belies his youth, Antoine enjoys working with oak and lets his wines speak for themselves in the cuverie. His wines play with oxidation creating a vinous appeal with mineral freshness. These are champagnes of great transparency and compelling density. This is a rising star to follow now!
